Extreme humid days during the summer season are one of the factors that make us feel like running away to colder places. Both low and high levels of humidity inside our home are problematic. Low humidity leads to dry air and it can result in an increased number of airborne diseases. High humidity can help dust mites and mold grow easily inside our home. The optimum level of humidity is 30-50 percent. In Australia, the coastal regions have high humidity for most of the year. We need to bring down the moisture content to an optimum level.  So, we will offer you some tips to keep the optimum humidity in your home.

Dehumidifiers

A dehumidifier will help you maintain the humidity. You can place it in areas that have got excess moisture content like the bathroom or any specific areas in your home. This device will ensure low moisture and that you get cool and dry air throughout the hot summer days.

Ventilation

Lack of ventilation is one of the main reasons for excess moisture. Use exhaust fans to get rid of the excess humidity in your home. Installing exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom will help in getting rid of the steam produced. Keep it on while you are taking a shower in the bathroom and after you cook for 5-10 minutes.

Minimise the Steam Production

Steam production inside our home can be reduced by closing the lid while boiling and cooking, and also by not using a cooktop stove and oven. Instead, use slow cookers which contribute less to the indoor humidity. You can reduce steam production by taking shorter and cold showers. Increased steam can lead to mold generation, this can be a huge problem if you are living in a rented property, call for professional bond cleaning services if necessary.

Air Conditioners

Air conditioners can dehumidify along with lowering the temperature in your home. So, keep your air conditioner in perfect condition. Replace the air filters and provide maintenance regularly. If your air conditioner has an ECM motor, turn the fan on and run it continuously, this will ensure air circulation and prevent high humidity.

Desiccant

Desiccants are a type of small bits of silica gel that can absorb moisture content. These can be bought from stores nearby and you get them when you buy a new bag to keep the moisture in the bags to an optimum level. These will be packed inside cloth or paper bags and they can be placed in areas where you feel high moisture content. These are reusable, just heat them when they are saturated. Activated charcoal can also be used for this objective.

Hang Your Laundry Outdoors

By hanging your laundry outdoors or by avoiding hanging your laundry indoors, you can reduce the moisture content inside your home. The moisture content in the laundry will evaporate into the environment and doesn’t stay back at your home.

Water Absorbing Indoor Plants

Most indoor plants contribute to humidity inside your home, but there are some plants which can absorb water or moisture content in the air, like Boston ferns. Find plants which absorb water from the air and plant them in your home.
