Most commonly known as a boob job, breast augmentation is a surgical procedure in which the size of the women’s breasts is enhanced. It is done by placing implants within the pre-existing breasts of the patient. Some women get this procedure for medical reasons, while for others, enhancing their physical appearance is the main purpose.

Nevertheless, this procedure has gained immense popularity in recent years. Its fame has also reached Dubai, where it has become one of the most performed invasive cosmetic procedures. You can now find many breast augmentation Dubai clinics and facilities run by top-of-the-line plastic surgeons and aesthetics experts.

If you are also planning to get this procedure, here’s all you need to know about it:

Initial Consultation

Any surgical procedure starts with a consultation session between the doctor and patient. And breast augmentation isn’t an exception. It provides the patient and doctor with an opportunity to discuss important details related to the surgery, i.e. outcome, complications and risks (if any), cost, position and type of implants, places of incision, etc. Generally, this session lasts from 60 to 90 minutes.

Types of Implants

There are two types of breast implants that are placed under the breast tissues. These include saline and silicone implants. Silicone variants contain silicone gel and feel like natural breast tissue. Saline implants, on the other hand, have sterile saltwater.

Apart from types, there are various other important factors to consider, such as shape and size.

The Right Candidate

Breast augmentation is a rather straightforward process. Therefore, anyone can undergo it. Having said that, a woman who enjoys optimal health is considered an ideal candidate for this treatment.

It is to be noted that this procedure is only advised for women having small breasts or those who desire an increase in the size or symmetry of their breasts. Those who have sagging breasts are not recommended to undergo this treatment. Furthermore, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are advised against getting it.

Preparation

As it is a surgical procedure, the preparation phase starts around six weeks prior to the treatment. During this phase, the patient is suggested to stop using nicotine products and quit smoking. The reason is that smoking can hamper the healing process. Other than that, it may also result in complications during the treatment.

Doctors also recommend putting a halt on hormonal birth control treatments as they can increase the risk of the formation of blood clots. A few days prior to the surgery, the patient is asked to stop drinking red wine. Moreover, the use of certain medications is also prohibited.

The Surgical Procedure

It is basically an outpatient procedure and is complete within 75 minutes. During the procedure, the doctor makes incisions on the body to place the implant. Bear in mind that the incisions marks are permanent; however, they fade away with time.

Depending on the type of surgery, the patient and doctor had decided during the consultation phase, the implant is placed. For this, a pocket is dissected behind the muscle and implant size is placed. This practice is followed to confirm the implant size is according to the patient’s requirements.

After that, the sizer is removed and the actual implant is placed after making the necessary adjustments (if required). Then, the incision is closed.

Risks & Complications

The process, although fairly safe, comes with the possibility of certain risks and complications. Some common ones among them, include:

  • Infection
  • Anaesthesia risks
  • Hematoma,
  • Change in the breast or nipple sensation
  • Faulty position of the implant
  • Poor scarring
  • Implant rupture or leakage
  • Persistent pain

These risks and complications are discussed in advance with the patient during the consultation phase, and written consent is obtained from them prior to performing the surgery.

Recovery and Downtime

Once the procedure is over, the patient can go home after 1 hour. The effects of the anaesthetic start to wear off after 72 hours.  After which the patient may feel discomfort or soreness. This, however, goes away gradually.

You can return to work within three to five days after undergoing this procedure. But, it’s recommended not to indulge in strenuous activities. Your doctor will advise you to wear a surgical bra for at least 2 weeks for support and comfort.

This concludes our comprehensive guide for breast augmentation surgery. However, an important thing we would like to share here is that always get cosmetic and surgical procedures, including breast augmentation, from a reputable facility.
