Podcasting is one of the most popular ways to convey a message or story to listeners across the world. All podcasters need is an innovative idea, a decent microphone, and a platform. Recording an episode is the easy part. Growing an audience is where many novice podcasters struggle.

After releasing an episode, beginners often wait for listeners to find their channel organically. With over 2.4 million podcasts as of June 2022, stumbling across a new series is like finding a needle in a haystack. Successful podcasters take action to get their name out to the general public. Follow these five proven strategies to grow your podcast audience:

It only makes sense for podcasters to utilize social media to reach their intended audience. Promoting new episodes on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even TikTok is a great way to lure in listeners. Try buying ad space on these sites or collaborating with like-minded influencers to introduce more people to the podcast.

2. Repurpose Episodes

After recording and uploading an interview, many podcasters simply walk away and wait for people to listen. However, this method relies on already having a loyal following. Repurposing each episode is a proven way to reach more listeners. What does this strategy involve? Consider writing a blog for each episode or posting a video of the interview on YouTube. Transcription snippets are another way to tease listeners on social media or through email newsletters.

Ideally, listeners don’t tune into a single episode. The goal is to create rabid fans who check out every release. The most important steps include subscribing to the podcast, rating the episode, and telling their friends. Include a verbal call to action (CTA) at the end of each episode. The channel description should also include a written CTA that leads to a landing page where people can sign up for the podcast’s email list.

4. Embrace SEO

Short for search engine optimization, SEO makes companies visible on Google and other popular search engines. This tried-and-true technique involves creating valuable content focused on target keywords. Podcasters should include these keywords in episode titles, descriptions, and related blogs. Successful SEO campaigns follow current algorithms to ensure the top spots in keyword searches. While often used in e-commerce marketing, it’s also extremely helpful for promoting a new podcast.

5. Write Compelling Descriptions

The best movie previews can grab a person’s interest in only a few minutes. Podcasters have even less time to create buzz around new episode releases. Writing compelling episode descriptions and titles is the best way to draw in an audience. Great descriptions should evoke emotions and leave the listener craving more. Instead of spoiling the interview, tease the listener with what they are about to hear.

6. Invite Well-Known Guests

Listeners love it when their favorite podcasters join forces. Consider inviting a well-known visitor to the show to stir up interest. The guest visitor will talk about the podcast on their own platform and bring in new listeners. This strategy is one of the most effective ways to reach an entirely new audience.
