Thaumaturge – Black Mage 

Lots of MMORPG players start with a melee DPS class. It’s simply the popular thing to do, and lots of MMOs make melee DPS classes the easiest ones for beginners. In Final Fantasy XIV’s case, however, the thaumaturge, which later on advances to be the Black Mage, is perhaps the most accessible of the DPS classes. 

Final Fantasy XIV has decided to do away with elemental weakness and resistance. This has made the elemental spells of the class be associated with a particular mechanic instead of nailing an enemy’s weakness. The Thaumaturge’s Fire spells deal more damage but costs mana. They also grant the Astral Fire status, which boosts succeeding Fire-aspected spells but also causes them to have a progressively increasing mana cost. 

To offset these are Ice spells, which deals the namesake-aspected damage. It doesn’t hurt as much as Fire spells but grants Umbral Ice, which reduces the mana cost of fire spells and increases mana regeneration. Unfortunately, it also reduces fire damage. But hey, can’t cast fire spells without mana. 

The Thaumaturge also has Lightning spells, which are unaffected by either Umbral Ice, making them convenient means to deal damage while recovering MP. Lastly, they also have utility spells to help them out, such as Transpose, which swaps a single charge of Umbral Ice to Astral Fire and vice versa, Sleep, Manafont, which restores 30% of mana, and many others. 

Lancer – Dragoon 

When it comes to looks, the Lancer is a rather cool choice for a first class in Final Fantasy XIV. It also helps that the melee class deals burst DPS and can dish out damage in between its chains. While the Lancer is good enough of a class in lower-level dungeons and instances, the class truly shines upon finally becoming a Dragoon, its progression, upon level 30. The class then finally gets access to Jump Abilities, as well as a wide variety of other abilities that deal damage while the Weaponskills cool down.  

Apart from its role as one of the most consistent melee DPS classes in the game, the class also plays a rather important role in Heavensward, as the class gets much representation in the storyline expansion. Players that chose to be this classic Final Fantasy class is going to be honored with the role they’ll be playing in that part of the game. Conjurer – White Mage 

A healer class isn’t something a lot of beginners choose. It’s a rather understandable sentiment for two reasons. First, healers aren’t exactly flashy and exciting. They just sit on the back of the formation, making sure nobody dies. Second, it’s a rather huge responsibility to be the one that makes sure nobody dies. Despite all that, however, being a Conjurer isn’t something new players should fear. Plus, being in-demand grants extra FFXIV gil. 

To say it’s a walk in the park would be unfair to healers as a whole. Conjurers, however, have a rather simple approach to healing. Compared to other healers that use sustained healing, they rely on burst healing, covering up much damage received by the target. They also have a wide variety of healing spells that affect all party members, such as Medica I and II. Lastly, at level 30, they can become White Mages and learn Benediction, which recovers all of a target’s HP, as well as Afflatus Rapture and Cure III, healing spell that affects the entire party. 

To help out with the healing, the Conjurer and the White Mage has a wide variety of utility actions for themselves, such as Presence of Mind, which reduces cast and recast times, and Thin Air, which removes the mana cost for all spells for 12 seconds. 

Finally, the class can do all sorts of things other than healing. To support their other party members, they have Divine Benison, which absorbs damage equivalent to a heal spell of 500 potency. They can also deal considerable damage with spells such as Stone I-IV, Aero I-II, Holy, Dia, and Glare.
