As a young person moving to a new city, you’re going to become very accustomed to living big in small spaces. Whether you’re looking at hostels, PGs or houses on rent in Bangalore, extra space comes at a premium, and if you’re talking about extra storage space, it’s pretty much impossible. Your closet is going to be working double duty already, and unless you can be a little creative and think outside the box, it won’t take long before your space starts resembling the neighbourhood garbage dump. That’s where we come in. With a few handy tips, we’re going to help you stay organised and optimal even in your small space.

Get used to it

No, we’re not just being glib here. We’re talking about how familiar and comfortable you are with your new home. If you’ve just moved to Bangalore, take some time to get used to your apartment and how things work before you start planning a system. This will help you identify which parts of your room you’re using and not using as well as different trends in your behaviour. Which parts of your closet do you use most regularly? Where do you keep your least-used belongings? Where do you tend to throw your bag and worn clothes at the end of the day? Being able to identify these elements will make it easier for you to sort and segregate your belongings later.

The great purge

Even if you did sort through your belongings before you moved to Bangalore, you couldn’t exactly predict what your life would be like in this city. But now that you’ve been living here for a while, you know exactly which of your belongings you regularly use and the ones that remain untouched. And getting organised is the perfect reason to get rid of them. Sort through your belongings and divide them into categories of ‘keep’ and ‘purge.’ If most of the items that you no longer want or need are in good condition, you can donate or resell them, but if they’re in a poor or unusable condition, it’s better to recycle or just dump them. Once you’ve got your piles prepared, bundle them up and keep them near the door so that you can clear the space immediately.

Divide your clothing by type

Now that you  know which of your clothes you’re keeping, it’s time to bring some organisation into your closet. Your cupboard probably has different types of storage already – from a hanging section to shelves. Depending on your habits, you need to decide which type is most convenient and easily accessible for you. If you’re more of a visual person, you might decide to keep most of your clothing in the hanging section, but if you prefer to separate your clothes by occasion, you might prefer to sort them out in piles for your drawers and bins. Whatever the case may be, we recommend dividing your closet into sections based on function. By keeping your formalwear in one place, your Indian wear in another, your shoes at the bottom and your loungewear in a drawer, you’ll never find yourself stuck in a ‘I-have-nothing-to-wear’ situation. You’ll always be able to find exactly what you need.

Create your own storage

Most flats for rent in Koramangala will come with only a limited amount of storage solutions. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t optimise them or transform some other furniture into storage spaces for yourself. Get some storage bins that you can stow away in less-accessible locations like under the bed, the top of a cupboard or stacked underneath a desk. If you invest in some bins that match the colour scheme of your room, it’ll look like a cleverly chosen decor element rather than a hoarder’s paradise. And don’t forget to maximise the vertical space in your home as well, whether it’s by inserting shelves in the wall, adding command hooks to your doors or the inside of cupboards.

So, there you have it. It’s easy to stay organised in a small space if you have the right tips to lead the way. Try them out and you’ll never have to feel cramped in your own home again.
