There are a lot of reasons why people avoid wearing glasses. Some don’t like the way they look where some fear that they will be teased by their peers. But if we talk beyond look and comfort, there’s a group of people that believe that wearing glasses can make their eyesight even worse.

While the first two reasons are nothing but a matter of personal choice, the last reason couldn’t be more false.

You need glasses because your eyesight is already bad. And if you avoid eyeglasses that are designed to improve your vision, you risk straining your eyes and further deteriorating your eyesight.

Can eyeglasses actually lead to bad vision?

If you wear glasses and your prescription is changing every year, you might think that your glasses are making your eyesight worse instead of improving it.

Your glasses are not responsible for your worsening vision.

As you age, your vision also goes through a series of changes. The lens in your eye loses its elasticity and you face trouble focusing on nearby objects. This condition is called presbyopia. If you consult an optometrist, they’ll prescribe you reading glasses to improve this problem.

Can eyeglasses fix your vision?

If you have a refractive error such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia or astigmatism, glasses won’t fix your vision.

Since these errors stem from the shape of your eyes, your glasses cannot fix these problems. But what they can do is improve your eyes’ ability to focus light properly and fix any vision distortion you face due to the unusual shape of your eyes.

Different lenses are available for different refractive errors. For instance, if you only have myopia or hyperopia, you’ll need single vision lenses. But, if you have astigmatism and your eyes can’t focus light at both near and far distances, then you’ll need progressive lenses or varifocals.

Those dealing with a loss of near vision due to ageing will need reading glasses for women or men. These glasses magnify your vision field to help you get a wider view of things in front of you.

When do eyeglasses damage your eyesight?

Eyeglasses almost never damage your eyesight. But, if the frame doesn’t fit your face or the lenses have a wrong prescription, you’ll be in for some vision trouble.

If the glasses are too tight or too loose on your face, it can cause headaches, dizziness, watery eyes and dizziness. This is why it’s important to pay close attention to the frame size when ordering glasses from an online glasses store.

When shopping for specs, check the fit and comfort first by trying out each pair. It’s good to have a nice looking pair of glasses but if it doesn’t fit, it isn’t the best for you.

Also, having the wrong prescription on the lenses don’t make for clear vision either. If you wear glasses, make sure you get an eye exam every year so you can update your lenses as your prescription updates.

If your frame doesn’t fit your face, you do’t have to replace it. Just take it to an optician and they’ll adjust the frame as per your requirement.

Will you be dependent on your glasses your whole life?

Once your vision gets worse, there’s no way you can reverse the problem unless you’re willing to go under the knife and have eye surgery.

Glasses are by far the most comfortable and affordable option to improve your vision without putting your eyes at risk. We are all going to need glasses at some point in our lives so why stall?

Does adjusting to new glasses take time?

Yes, adjusting to new glasses will take some time. Where most people adapt to new glasses in a few days, some might even take weeks to do so.

As your eyes learn to deal with the new vision power, it’s normal to feel signs of discomfort with your new glasses. But, you have to be consistent and wear your glasses as much as you can or at least when your eyes are at work.

The type of lenses you have helps in determining how long this adjustment period will take, for example, it’s easier to get used to single vision lenses than those with multiple powers.

Wear your glasses with pride and confidence. They’ll only make your vision better and crisper.
