Firefighters play a vital role in keeping residents of large buildings safe. The local government code can specify when, where and how many fire extinguishers are needed in a building. If there is a fire alarm, sprinkler or standpipe in New York City, a security guard must be present to perform the duties of monitoring the fire department. New York City requires Fire Watch Guards to be trained and licensed to use residential or commercial buildings.

The Fire Watch Guard is also required by law to operate safely on most construction sites where open flames are used.

At least one Fire Guard is needed in public places, such as shelters, movie theaters, hotels, office buildings and water baths where no spraying system or fire protection system exists. Fireguard-trained guards are much needed than those of Fire Watch Services’ non-trained security guards.
