Planting Crops
To begin, it’s important to understand what crops are worth growing in Stardew Valley. The following is a list of the basic plantable items along with their sell price per crop harvested. Keep in mind that your profits may vary depending on where you choose to sell them at.
Basic Crop Top-Tier Crop
Strawberry, Grape, Pumpkin, Cranberries, Artichoke Dill / Leek, Beet (2x Day), Tomato Amaranth, Yams*, Melon*
Chili Pepper Ancient Fruit*
Olive Onion*
Asparagus * = These crops will yield two crops per day.
* = These crops will yield two crops per day.
As you can see, the most profitable crop in Stardew Valley is melons and asparagus, but each one of those takes 7 days to grow. You’ll need to wait a week before getting any money back from them so it may not be the best idea to invest in those until you have a large enough farm.
Another interesting thing to note is that there’s currently a glitch where crops planted on tilled soil can become diseased before they’re fully grown. If you want to avoid this from happening, your plantable crops should be started inside greenhouses. These items can be crafted inside of the carpentry tab and will keep your plants out of harm’s way. You can find a full list of all the crops in Stardew Valley here if you need any help deciding which ones to grow first.
Grow Animals
Do you want to make even more money from your farm? The next thing that you can do is invest in animals. You can either buy the farm animals randomly at Marnie’s Ranch or you can use bait to fish them up from your pond. Here are all of the animal values along with the required bait for each one:
Bait Required for Animal
Turnip, Potato, Cucumber, Strawberry, Corn
Seaweed
Chili Pepper Ancient Fruit* Honey Comb / Void Mayonnaise Farm Animals Value with Bait
Brown Chicken 800g 1,000g Duck 2,500g 4,000g Goat 3,000g 6,000g Rabbit 1,200g 2,500g White Chicken 400g 800g Gray Sheep 1,000g 15,000g
As you can see, the most profitable animal in Stardew Valley is a goat because it’ll grow to be worth 6 thousand gold coins. This is very valuable since it’s only 3 days after you buy them. You can also buy chickens and sheep from Marnie’s Ranch but they won’t earn you as much money. So we suggest that you decide which animals you want to raise and then get started on them right away! Your animal will need to be raised for 7 days before giving birth so remember that when deciding if it’s too expensive to buy.
Manage Your Farm
Now that you have a better understanding of farming in Stardew Valley, it’s time to learn how to manage your farm. In this section, we’ll go over some helpful tips and tricks for developing a successful farm!
You should always keep your animals inside of a structure. If you let them run free at night, there’s a chance that they’ll get hit by lightning or killed by monsters. You should also remember to keep your animals fed and give them enough water every day, otherwise, their happiness level will drop very low.
If you want to dig up dirt or plant crops, you can use a hoe to do so. You can also equip it in your tool slot so that holding down ‘a’ will change the action of your ‘w,’ allowing you to dig soil without needing to waste time with character actions.
If you have any extra money, don’t forget about the blacksmith in town. He’ll offer to upgrade your axes, pickaxes, and hoes for a price so that you can more easily dig up dirt and mine ores! This will definitely save you some time and money since you won’t need to buy new tools from the Adventurer’s Guild all of the time.
