Gravity bongs, also known as geebs, use two empty plastic bottles to funnel smoke through water and push it into the lungs of the consumer. Gravity bongs are essentially bottles submerged in water with a bowl of cannabis on top. Draw out the water slowly as the cannabis burns to fill the bottle with smoke. Put your mouth over the opening of the bottle and press the bottle downward so that the smoke will be propelled into your lungs by gravity. It’s done!
Is gravity bongs a way to get high?
Yes, in a nutshell. Heavy concentration of smoke in a gravity bong fills your lungs far beyond what you would normally experience from a pipe or joint. You are essentially inhaling in one breath the smoke from an entire bowl of cannabis when you inhale the contents of the smoky bottle. Gravity bongs, therefore, are not for the faint-hearted. An old school method of consumption, it delivers a strong hit of THC to even experienced cannabis consumers who aren’t used to it.
Here’s a handy guide to constructing your own gravity bong using everyday household objects if you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia with your cannabis consumption. (Disclaimer: Inhalation of combustible materials from a plastic smoking device could be harmful to your health. Proceed at your own risk.)
Can gravity bongs be made or bought?
It’s probably a bad idea to start with a gravity bong if you’re a first-time cannabis user or have low tolerance. Nonetheless, gravity bongs are an excellent DIY setup for intermediate to advanced smokers since they deliver the smoke faster than other methods. Don’t like to craft? If you want to have a potent and different smoking session, add one of these gravity bongs to your collection.
Is it safe to use water bottles?
The plastic bottles used for homemade bongs and smoking devices, which contain PETE or PET (polyethylene terephthalate) can release chemicals when heated (like the water left in a hot car after being left in a hot bottle). The chemicals in your gravity bong may be pulled into your lungs when the heat is applied.
Researchers are still conducting research to determine what kind of impact exposure to this type of radioactivity might have on the human body. Plastic smoking devices are often avoided by marijuana consumers as a precaution, in favor of glass or silicone. Consider the risks and proceed with caution if you plan to make gravity bongs out of plastic materials.
DIY gravity bong: How to make one
Gather these items first:
- A plastic bottle (16-20 ounces is ideal)
- A bucket or a 2-liter plastic bottle
- Aluminized foil
- Box cutters or sharp knives
- This device pokes at the skin
- One gram of cannabis strain of your choice (at least)
If you don’t know where to begin, gravity bongs may seem intimidating, but the process is really quite straightforward. In less than 10 minutes, with a little ingenuity, creativity, and a little determination, you can make your own gravity bong with materials you probably already have in your home.
Step 1: Cut the smaller bottle
To cut off the bottom of your smaller bottle, use your box cutter. Hence, don’t trim too much of the bottle bottom off so that you receive a bigger hit.
Step 2: Cut the larger bottle
Get your 2 liter bottle, cut the bottom off and fill it with water. Make sure your bucket is filled with water if you are using one.
Step 3: Make a hole in the bottle cap
You can cut a hole in the cap of your smaller bottle using your box cutter or scissors. Air should be drawn through the hole, but not so large that foil (and cannabis) fall into the water.
Step 4: Shape the foil bowl
Make a bowl divot for your cannabis by wrapping aluminum foil around the cap. Using foil to keep your cannabis from falling into the water below, you can shape the bowl to be as deep as you want. The foil may need to be cut off and shaped to prevent cannabis from spilling. Try this metal bowl piece specifically designed to be used for gravity bongs if you’re looking for a health hack.
Step 5: Poke holes in foil
Making holes in aluminum foil requires the use of a sharp poking tool. Keep the foil from ripping! To achieve proper ventilation, you will need three to five holes.
Step 6: Load cannabis in bottle cap
Don’t screw on the foil-wrapped cap yet. Place your preferred strain of cannabis into the foil-wrapped bottle cap.
Step 7: Submerge small water bottle
This is where it gets tricky. For the larger bottle (or bucket), submerge the smaller bottle in the bottom, until just the cap remains above water. Wrap the foil-wrapped cap of the bottle tightly around it, then screw it onto the bottle.
Step 8: Light your cannabis
While the bottle fills with smoke, light the cannabis and slowly lift the smaller bottle away from the water while it fills with smoke. Make sure your cap is completely screwed on, and make sure you have no holes or gaps in the side of the bottle if the bottle isn’t filling with smoke. The leakage of your gravity bong could compromise it, so some trial and error will be necessary before you succeed in making it work.
Step 9: Unscrew the cap
Putting your mouth over the bottle opening after your bottle has been filled with smoke is the next step.
Step 10: Push the bottle into the water
Back in the water, gently push the bottle. Your lungs will be filled with smoke as the water flows into the bottle.
After filtration through water, cannabis smoke will be cooler and have a stronger THC concentration. Preparation and not inhaling too much smoke is important for the best effects. Cannabis consumers of all levels should proceed with caution with this product, as it will make them cough!
Does your gravity bong need to be replaced with foil regularly?
With a gravity bong, you can reuse the foil. You won’t need to change it unless you rip the foil or if the holes become clogged and prevent adequate ventilation, at which point you should replace it.
